Sorry somewhat bias about this subject, seeing that I have about a dozen Model 37/87s and its immediate predecessor the Remington Model 17. Used they run $100+ and up on both e-bay and gunbroker. We all know what that means.Ģ) It is the simplest designed slide action shotgun in terms of number of parts (no other pump has as few), takedown design and materials of construction (as SuperXOne stated).ģ) It is the lightest all steel gun built (especially the older versions) and arguably the slickest cycling pump ever designed (more personal opinion than anything else).Ĥ) It's action layout/design has been copied multiple times (and not always to the better) so that should tell you something.ĥ) As the gun in question is a post 855000 serial number the barrels should interchange with little to no issue. Browning design (changes mostly had to do with manufacturing cost/labor/time). Just to add a few statements to SuperXOne's excellent remarks:ġ) The Model 37 is a slightly modified John M. The 2016 catalog lists Featherlight, DeerSlayer, Defense, camouflaged Turkey Slayer, Waterfowl, and Trap versions. Nothing else is so righteous, for so little money. Vent ribs are made to catch customers.Ī used M37 Ithaca, bought right, is the greatest bargain in fine shotguns in modern history. You might want to add a modern recoil pad, if it doesn't have one, after you've shot the gun awhile. If it has a full choke, find a gunsmith that will ream it out to a tight improved cylinder, about 12-13 thousands constriction, and learn to shoot it at fast flying birds and clay targets. The M37 also handles, points, and shoots as well as a well balanced, fine English shotgun that literally costs four hundred times $260 as a new gun. ![]() They will still be shooting for centuries, as long as people shoot shotguns. There are no cheap parts, no aluminum, no plastic, and no pot metal used to make it. The M37 is made entirely of steel and walnut. ![]() ![]() The other three were the Winchester Model 12's made before 1964, Belgian Browning Auto Fives made from 1903 to about the middle 1960's, and any Winchester Super X Model One. The Model 37 Ithaca is one of only four repeating shotguns ever marketed in the United States that a reasonable owner would want to spend money having engraved, and it's the only one of those four still sold brand new, with 100% factory parts availability.
